It is with deep regret that we announce that Arrays for Cell Nanodevices (A4cell), the company that has coordinated the ICARO project until now, has withdrawn from the consortium following the commencement of insolvency proceedings.

Despite this setback, the remaining consortium partners remain fully committed to completing the project and achieving its objectives. To ensure a smooth transition and continuity of the work, the following measures are being implemented:

1. New project coordinator: Effective immediately, Dr Margarita del Val, Head of the Viral Immunology Group at the Severo Ochoa Centre for Molecular Biology (CBM-CSIC) in Madrid, will take over as project coordinator.
2. Transfer of responsibilities: The Spanish National Research Council (CSIC) will assume responsibility for carrying out all outstanding tasks previously assigned to A4cell.
3. Project extension: A six-month extension has been requested from the European Innovation Council (EIC) to allow sufficient time to complete all administrative procedures associated with the change of coordination, as well as the transfer of all materials and data generated by A4cell.

Although this is undoubtedly a challenging moment for the project, the ICARO consortium remains committed to its mission and objectives.

The event took place on 1 February at the UPM School of Industrial Engineering and Design (Escuela Técnica Superior de Ingeniería y Diseño Industrial). Among the highlights of the programme, ICARO was showcased as a success story during a round-table discussion alongside two other European research projects: RETIMAGER and THERMOBAT, the latter having already progressed to the EIC Transition stage.

The event also featured presentations by Carlos Casorrán, from EISMEA, and Isabel Obieta, Programme Manager. They provided attendees with an overview of the different EIC Pathfinder portfolios and detailed information about the funding call, covering aspects of great interest to the participants.

The event offered an excellent opportunity to share ICARO’s progress, exchange experiences with other European research initiatives and highlight the potential of Pathfinder-funded projects to bring innovative technologies closer to real-world applications.

La entrada ICARO Presented at the EIC Pathfinder Infoday in Madrid se publicó primero en Icaro Project.

We are delighted to announce the kick-off meeting of ICARO project (Intracellular Carriers Against Resistant microOrganisms) took place in Madrid past 9th of May at the Margarita Salas Centre for Biological Research. This exciting proposal, financed by the European Innovation Council in its Horizon Europe Pathfinder call, brings together experts in microbiology, immunology, nanochemistry, cell biology, microelectronics, and industrial entrepreneurship to develop a novel vaccine platform to fight resistant and emergent infectious diseases.

Our mission is developing new microchips to carry pathogen antigens to the cells thus inducing efficient antigen presentation leading to long-lasting immunological responses. Should the objectives of the project be successfully achieved, ICARO consortium will pave the way to a completely novel approach to develop cost-effective vaccines against intracellular pathogens that remain as a relevant clinical unmet, including CMV, SARS-CoV-2, Salmonella Typhimurium and Leishmania amazonensis, used as model pathogens to assess the feasibility of ICARO biochips platform.
